The Juvenile Literature Collection supports the curricular, research, and scholarship activities of the students and faculty of the University. Adults are the intended users of this collection, which contains a broad spectrum of materials published for young people. The library seeks to provide quality collections, information/reference services, and instruction in a timely and effective manner to students, faculty, staff and community who use the Juvenile Literature Collection.
Juvenile literature books and periodicals are located on level 4 in the southwest wing and are arranged by the Dewey Decimal Classification. The Juvenile Literature Reference Collection is also on level 4 and is arranged by Library of Congress Classification. Books of criticism and interpretation of juvenile literature are housed primarily on level 5 and are arranged by Library of Congress Classification. Juvenile Collection contains fiction and non-fiction published for young people from birth to age 18. Some adult books may also be in this collection.
Juvenile Locked Case contains circulating items that are housed separately because of format or content.
Juvenile Reference Collection contains primarily bibliographic sources and finding aids to assist in identifying books by genre, topic, author, illustrator, character, time period, setting, etc.; biographical sources; indexes; and support materials for using literature in the classroom or library.
Utah Children's Authors Collection (non-circulating, housed in a secure room in the Juvenile Literature Collection) contains books written or illustrated by Utahns or people with Utah affiliations (degrees from Utah universities). The collection is intended for in-house use to insure that JUV SPEC items remain in pristine condition.
Juvenile Special Collections collects and preserves for historical and scholarly purposes the personal papers and literary or artistic works of children's and young adult authors and illustrators. Within the collection, four focus areas are being developed, including
Big Books are part of the circulating Juvenile Collection, support the Teacher Education program, and are housed in folio shelving.
808.837contains older books that were part of the early curriculum collections. These books need reclassification so that Juvenile Collection is in one call number sequence.
